What is Reflexology

Reflexology is an holistic therapy, which works on the belief that there are reflex areas on the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body.  Reflexology works on an individual basis, and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.  There is evidence of it being used over 5000 years ago by the Egyptians, and later by African, Indian tribes and Chinese.  In 1902 Dr William Fitzgerald wrote a book on 'Zone Therapy'.  In the 1930's, Eunice Ingham, a Physiotherapist created the term ' Reflexology' and the technique as we know it today.

A typical session

The Reflexologist will take a detailed medical history, and explain the process, while you relax on a couch or chair.  Footwear and socks are removed for foot Reflexology and your feet will be examined and any problems noted.  Then appropriate pressure using finger, thumbs and knuckles is applied to the reflex areas, together with lots of relaxing techniques.  The reflexes are believed to form a miniature map of the body with each foot relating to the left and right side of the body.

How will it help me?

Reflexology can be a wonderfully relaxing experience where you can take time out from everyday pressures.  The therapist's expert touch will help you relax which can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension.  The result is an overall sense of wellbeing.  Reflexology can be used safely on almost everyone at any age, with few contraindications to treatment.  Reflexologists do not claim to cure any condition.  The aim is to promote relaxation supporting the body's natural ability to achieve balance.
